Day 5 - Friday 18 May 2012

WHISTLER, CANADA

Weather: Overcast, windy and cold! Kinda like Melbourne!

View from ferry
Another 6:30am start for a 7:30am departure as we had to catch our ferry back to the mainland. I was a little nervous as the weather had changed dramatically. It was overcast, windy and cold so I was thinking that this would lead to rough seas on the ferry.

This morning there was a mix up with our breakfast room. We were told by our tour Director Pauline yesterday that breakfast was going to be set on the 2nd floor of the hotel. When I went to the 2nd floor this morning, there was nothing there so had to go down to the Reception Desk and ask. Apparently, it had been moved to one of the meeting rooms near the lobby. Luckily I went down early and checked with reception. Some of my touuring colleagues didn't think to do this so were late for breakfast.

Well, when Pauline found out she was not happy. She almost had a go at the Manager in front of us, before deciding to take it outside. Apparently, the manager didn't know either until she went up to the 2nd floor to check that everything was going OK with breakfast. She guided the people that were still waiting on the 2nd floor over to the correct place.

After breakfast, we were back on the bus and on our way to catch our ferry to the mainland. It was a bit choppy but I avoided being sick by sitting outside - it didn't matter that it was freezing!

Once we landed, Pauline took us to see a building that, apparently, was Vancouver's hidden treasures and one of the most beautiful Art Deco buildings in the world. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is stunning in the lobby.

Once we were inside the lobby of the building, we were told that there was only one lift working and they were leaving it free for residents of the building so we couldn't go up to the balcony as Pauline had mentioned.

So, it was off to the food court over the road to have lunch.

After lunch it was on the road again, bound for Whistler. We crossed the Lions Gate Bridge to the North Shore and made our way along Route 99 - the Sea to Sky Highway.

Shannon Falls
I was a little nauseous at the beginning of the winding road and we stopped at a place called Shannon Falls (near the town of Squamish) just in time! As the name suggests, it's a waterfall.

Then it was back on the bus with Pauline telling us some facts in a humourous way. She is really great. She actually seems to enjoy her work. She's way better than the tour director I had last year. Pauline actually has a sense of humour - and a good one too!
We arrived at Whistler at 3:15pm - just enough time for us to go to our rooms before our local guide toook us around the ski resort at 4pm.

Man, was it cold!! Even though the sun was out, the wind was icy. As it was late spring, there wasn't much snow around. There were plenty of cyclists taking their chances at going down the slopes on their bicycles. As it's a long weekend, there are a lot of young people that have made their way up.

Our guide was really great at showing us around and getting us orientated. Once the tour was over, Marilyn and I went straight over to the Olympic rings to take photos (Marilyn was really looking forward to doing this).

The Olympic Rings
We had dinner at a place called "The Old Spaghetti Factory" where you get a complentary salad and ice cream with your meal. When we arrived, there was hardly anyone there. When we left, there were people waiting to get in.

On our walk around town, I felt like I was in Mt Buller or Falls Creek with the amount of Australians running shops and as waiting staff at The Old Spaghetti Factory!

After dinner, it was straight back to hotel, turn on the heater and staying warm! According to the weather channel, it's going to be 0 degrees tonight!

Tomorrow, it's off to the once hill billy town of Kamloops. I'm not sure when I'll have WiFi again so I may not have another blog for a while. I'll have to see how we go.
